gear list
Helios Type 69 console strips — that punchy ’70s Olympic Studios magic behind Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix. Tuff Gong Studios in Jamaica relied on Type 69s, shaping the sound of Bob Marley and the Wailers with a woody midrange and solid low end. Credit the Lustraphone transformer preamp—pristine clean or gloriously nasty when pushed—and the highly musical inductor-based EQ. A Studio Q13 favorite for good reason.
Great River MP-2NV (Neve 1073) offers a thick, "big iron" tone reminiscent of 70s British consoles, adding harmonic saturation and weight.
Tube Mic Pre Amps. Vintage Telefunken V77 and Mercury Recording M72s - Vintage mic pres introduce pleasant tube saturation, adding thickness and harmonic complexity to the mix. Classic analog glue and a creamy high end softening of sound. The transformers (especially the massive input iron) are known for producing a very deep and punchy bass response, as well as a “smooth and creamy” high end. Used at renown studios like EMI Abbey Road Studios.
Avalon VT-737sp - Clean Modern Sounds or gooey tube goodness. You choose.
